Sandbagging and levee construction begins in the Riverside neighborhood in Sioux City

The Sioux City Engineering Division of the City’s Public Works Department has closed River Drive between Goldie Avenue & Beck Street from June 17, 2014 until June 27, 2014.

The closure will allow City crews to safely complete construction of the levee extension along River Drive.

Motorists are advised to reduce speed, drive cautiously, and obey all traffic control signs and barricades with regard to this closure.

The City of Sioux City will have sandbagging materials available in Goldie Park beginning at 1:00 pm Wednesday, June 18.

Residents will need to do their own sandbagging. Materials will be available as long as they are needed.

Residents are encouraged to cover their basement drains with a piece of plastic and place a sandbag over top to reduce the risk of groundwater intrusion.

Information will be provided to keep the citizens updated and information is also on the City of Sioux City Facebook, (locatesiouxcity) and at

City and emergency operations staff will hold a Big Sioux River status update at the Security Institute on the Western Iowa Tech campus June 18 at 2:30 p.m.
