Volunteers needed for sandbagging along Sioux City side of the Big Sioux

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - The city of Sioux City put out a call for volunteers to help fill sandbags along the Sioux City side of the Big Sioux River.

Volunteers gathered Thursday at the City Field Services Headquarters at 1723 18th Street to fill up sandbags.

Sandbags are available for Riverside residents in Goldie Park, 1620 Goldie Avenue.

The Big Sioux River is expected to reach a record crest Friday afternoon.

Residents who may be affected are being encouraged to sandbag their property and bring valuable items up out of their basements.

"It's basically on their prediction. We will see in the next day, it will actually rise fairly quickly up to their prediction of 109 feet," said Jade Dundas, Public Works Director.

Volunteers filled more than 4,000 sandbags, Thursday.

Because of the overwhelming response, sandbag filling ended at 4:00 p.m.

Sandbags and sand will remain at Goldie Park through Thursday night for Riverside residents to fill their own bags, if needed.
