Posted:
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

The Woodbury County Emergency Management team has been monitoring the rise of the Big Sioux River continually and City Public Works staff has been working diligently to extend the levee and provide sand and sandbags to the Riverside residents.

The levee extension will be complete this evening, before the anticipated crest at 6:00pm on Friday, June 20. It is built to have plenty of room for water levels higher than predicted. Residents are asked to stay away from the river’s edge and there is no evacuation of Riverside anticipated.

Sandbagging efforts were successful Thursday with volunteers helping to fill bags at City Field Services Headquarters and Goldie Park. Due to the community’s quick response to help, sandbagging operations were terminated at both locations at 4:00 PM.

Highway 12 will be closed from Military Road north in Sioux City. Highway 12 is expected to experience some flooding north of Sioux City. There are NO plans to close the bridge between Sioux City and North Sioux City on Military Road.

I-29 has been closed north of Exit 2 (North Sioux City) and detour maps are available on the City’s website at www.sioux-city.org.
