Rock Valley homeowner devastated by flood waters

ROCK VALLEY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Dave Wesselink has been living on Main and 19th Street in Rock Valley, Iowa since 1966. He said he never imagined flooding this bad.

The Wesselink family was told to evacuate Monday evening, and Wesselink said they had no time to prepare.

"We didn't believe it. We were moving some things up in the basement, hoping they wouldn't get wet," Wesselink said.

When they got to return home after the waters receded on Main Street,  he was in a state of shock.

"When we finally came back, there was eight inches on the main floor, and everything was rotten," Wesselink said.

Friday, friends and family came out to help clean up what's left of his main floor, and Wesselink said he's so thankful for all the assistance.

"I couldn't do it alone. I've had heart surgery, and I just can't do much of those kinds of things," Wesselink said.

He said even though it looks bad now,  he's hoping they can re-build, and he can still live in his home.

The Mayor said the community is resilient and will bounce back from this devastation. They won't let the flood waters sink their spirits.
