Norfolk, NE man sentenced to 7 to 11 years for shooting

A Norfolk man will spend just over five years in prison after being found guilty of felony assault and weapons charges related to a house party shooting in Norfolk last year.

Twenty-five year old Arturo Raya was sentenced to a total of seven to 11 years in prison in Madison County District Court Monday afternoon.

He pleaded no contest to shooting Devan Key of Norfolk at a party last February.

Raya said in court that he blamed the incident on having abused a combination of alcohol, marijuana and cocaine that night.

He told Judge James Kube he hoped to use the incident as a chance to turn his life around.

Key testified in court Monday that the bullet is still lodged in his abdomen, and that he's in almost constant pain because of it.

Raya's sentence means he'll be eligible for parole after three-and-a-half years and mandatory release in five-and-a-half years.
