The character actor appeared in an array of films, including The Magnificent Seven opposite Steve McQueen and Yul Brynner, Rhinoceros, Baby Doll, Waltz of the Toreadors and The Godfather: Part III. But throughout Wallach's six decade-plus career, he never scored an Oscar nomination. In 2010, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded Wallach with an honorary Oscar as tribute for his ability to become "the quintessential chameleon, effortlessly inhabiting a wide range of characters, while putting his inimitable stamp on every role." At 94, he was the second oldest recipient of an honorary Oscar, behind Robert Boyle, who was 98.

Wallach continued to act into his 90s. His recent film credits include Mystic RiverThe Holiday and 2010's Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, which was his final movie.

In addition to his work in film, Wallach, who served in the Army during World War II before launching his acting career, was a noted stage actor, earning a Tony Award in 1951 for The Rose Tattoo. His TV credits include Playhouse 90, The Philco Television Playhouse, Kojak, Batman (as Mr. Freeze), Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Nurse JackieER, and the made-for-TV movie The Poppy Is Also a Flower, for which he won an Emmy.

Wallach is survived by his wife of 66 years, actress Anne Jackson, and their three children, Peter, Roberta and Katherine.
