Problem causing zebra mussels appear in northern Iowa

Posted:

Officials overseeing events on the Great Lakes, and in bodies of water across the region, are warning against aquatic hitchhikers.

Zebra mussels can cause serious problems, killing species and increasing algae blooms.

The Department of Natural Resources says a zebra mussel was recently found at Lake Cornelia in northern Iowa, but the mussel was early in its developmental stage.

The DNR will continue to monitor Lake Cornelia to determine if it's a serious problem.

Officials say cleaning and drying your boat between putting it in bodies of water is essential to preventing outbreaks.
