Mitchell Betsworth finished 3rd among all powerlifters at the Special Olympics USA Games.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Mitchell Betsworth did very well at the Special Olympics USA Games.
In fact, Mitchell took third place out of 78 power lifters, earning a bronze medal overall.
His best event was the dead lift, in which he lifted 375 pounds - a new personal best. In that event, he won the gold medal.
He also took the silver in the bench press with a lift of 200 pounds, and fourth in the squat at 230 pounds.
For Mitchell to do as well as he did on a national stage represented Sioux City and Iowa well, and his father and coach, Troy, couldn't be more proud.
"I thought his performance was wonderful," said Troy. "Deep down, I really wanted him to do well, but after the opening ceremonies and everything, I was just so proud for him to be there. He could have finished dead last and I really would have been content."
Betsworth says the support of everyone, from local friends to Special Olympics has been gratifying.
