Firework shops in North Sioux City gearing up for a busy week

A proper Fourth of July celebration always needs a grand finale, and Siouxland's firework shops are noticing a lot of people interested in just that.

Gunderson's Fireworks in North Sioux City says business is booming.

"Seeing that the fourth is on a Friday, it even makes for a busier week ahead of that and an even busier weekend last year, so it's already a lot better than last year, as far as I can tell," MaKayla Perryman, Gunderson's Assistant Manager said.

Just up the road at Zort's Fireworks, they're still preparing for what they think will be a crazy week to come.

"It's kind of hard to tell. This is the week where it really starts happening. Friday on is about the madness, but so far, looking at it, it's been about the same," Tyler Kruse, Zort's Store Manager said.

Don Lantis, owner of Lantis Fireworks, says the business has been spotty.

But their store has been around since 1945, and he says this is business as usual.

"Every year is that way. I mean, it's not unusual. People always wait until the third and the fourth, sometimes the second, but never before that. I don't know why people do that," Lantis said.

Regardless of business, all three firework shops are noticing the excitement generated from a Friday Fourth of July.

"That's kind of part of the excitement, too. Saturday's the fifth, so people can kind of just roll over and make it a weekend affair," Kruse said.

And a weekend full of fireworks is certainly good for business.

"A lot of what you see here is going to be pretty well cleaned up and out of here," Kruse said.

Lantis says in all his years in the fireworks business, the Fourth has become a favorite holiday of his, not necessarily because it's peak business season, but simply because of how long a fireworks show can keep a family together.

"You stay until eleven at night, or twelve at night. There's no other holiday that the family's together that much," Lantis said.

Airborne crackles and pops that unify families, and the entire country, for one whole day.

All three fireworks shops have extended hours.

Chances are you'll catch at least one of them open if you stop in North Sioux anytime between eight a.m. and eleven p.m. this week.
