STORM LAKE, Iowa (KTIV) -

A prisoner convicted of a murder in Storm Lake, Iowa as a teenager wants to get released early.

Rene Zarate was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 2001 for a murder at a mobile home park in Storm Lake. He was 15-years-old at the time of the killing.

Investigators say the victim was stabbed about 50 times after an argument with a group of teens.

In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that people who were minors when they were sentenced to life in prison without parole could request a resentencing.

A resentencing hearing will take place for Zarate on July 25.
