Eric Wordekemper had his number retired by Storm Lake St. Mary's on Thursday night.
STORM LAKE, Iowa (KTIV) -
One of the greatest honors an athlete can have is to have their jersey retired. Storm Lake St. Mary's retired former baseball standout Eric Wordekemper's number on Thursday night.
He had success in high school, college and the pros. Wordekemper was a varsity starter for the Panthers for five years and was Iowa's Class 1A pitcher of the year in 2002. After three years at Creighton, he spent seven seasons in the Yankees farm system, reaching Triple-A.
Wordekemper is recovering from an injury and is still playing. To be honored in his hometown was a big thrill.
"It feels great. It's always nice to come back home to Storm Lake," said Wordekemper. "For St. Mary's to do this, it's an honor for me, but especially the community and the school itself. It was a little unexpected, but I think it's great for the high school and St. Mary's, and I also can't discredit my teammates that I've always played with"
Wordekemper also threw out the first pitch for St. Mary's game against Alta-Aurelia.
