UPDATE: Saturday in the Park heats up

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - Half a day, six bands and thousands of people.

That's what Saturday in the Park has become in its 24 years of existence.

That held true at Grandview Park in Sioux City Saturday.

It's an event that brings people far and near.

"It's something that we put on our calendar at the beginning of the year and we know when we're going," said Mark Ferdig.

And there are many reasons why.

"My husband plays in Mat D and the Profane Saints," said Heidi Deignan.

"The atmosphere here, you can't beat it," said Steve Cunningham.

"My family has come out every year for the last three and a half years, but this is my first year out here," said Karen Rilling.

One thing unites them all.

"The music, of course," said Cunningham.

At the all-day, free event local bands share the same stage as well-known artists.

"My wife Julie loves Bonnie Raitt, and I do too," said Cunningham.

"Mr. Marley, I just absolutely loved him," said Alice Krienert.

And with the great food and the Kids Zone, it's an event that welcomes all.

"I think it's great," said Rilling. "Very family-oriented."

With temperatures approaching 90 degrees, there were plenty of fans, sunscreen and of course, water.

"Lots of water, the umbrella, blanket, just doing the best I can," said Deignan.

"Sunscreen and water," said Krienert.

"This brim helps," said Cunningham. "This hat is about 30 years old."

With thousands packing Grandview Park, these people all march to the beats of different drums. But they all agree: Saturday in the Park is all about the music.

"Just listening to the music, it takes over," said Deignan.

"The music takes over in an atmosphere like this," said Cunningham. "Everybody has been respectful to each other."

For one night, the sound is enough for everyone.

"The atmosphere out here is so awesome," said Krienert. "It's hard to explain. You have to come out and see it."

So if you missed Saturday in the Park...

"It's a great thing and if they haven't been supporting it, by golly, they ought to." said Ferdig.

In addition to the Titans of Industry, Mat D and the Profane Saints, Wild Feathers, Ziggy Marley and Bonnie Raitt, the final act of the evening was the Avett Brothers.

PREVIOUS STORY:

It's a Sioux City summer classic: Saturday in the Park was expected to bring in a high volume of music fans from the Siouxland area, Saturday.

The annual music festival began early this afternoon with a performance by the Titans of Industry.

Mat D and the Profane Saints took over shortly, followed by Wild Feathers and Ziggy Marley.

For the audience, it's not just music that the festival has to offer - there's also food and even a Kids Zone.

However, the music is what brings people in from all over the Siouxland area.

We caught up with one man who comes to the event every year from Omaha, and tried to bring a whole crowd this year.
