Plainview HS graduate Sam Meuret (right) has qualified for the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship.
They don't get a lot of attention, but the Iowa men's golf team has had a lot of success. The Hawkeyes have been in the NCAA Regionals six straight years, one of just three Big Ten teams that can say that.
And Iowa is adding talent from Siouxland. Plainview, Nebraska, graduate Sam Meuret will play for the Hawks this fall.
Last Monday, Meuret qualified for the upcoming U.S. Amateur Championship. He shared medalist honors in sectional qualifying in Omaha by shooting 4-under par over 36 holes.
Meuret will play next at the national championship on August 11th through the 17th at the Atlanta Athletic Club. He was the 2013 Class C state champion in Nebraska and finished second this year.
There are four Hawkeyes playing in the PGA's John Deere Classic just oustide the Quad Cities this week.
Iowa sophomore Raymond Knoll earned one of four qualifying spots by shooting a 65 on Monday. Three former Iowa golfers -- Guy Boros, Steven Ihm and Aaron Krueger will all compete in Silvis, Illinois.
Ihm played in the tournament last year as an amateur and missed the cut by just two strokes but he'll make is debut as a pro on Thursday.
"The John Deere has reached out to Steven and given him the exemption to play as a professional and start his professional career here, which is very exciting for him and exciting for us as a program," said coach. "I've said all along, I think these guys can play well. I know Steve has been around this course a few times and played well last year so I'm excited to see what they can do."
University of Iowa day is Thursday at the John Deere Classic. Fans are encouraged to wear black and gold.
The tournament has a purse of $4.7 million. The winner gets $846,000.
