LAKES AREA NEWS: 4th of July fireworks display draws criticism

Last Friday’s Fourth of July fireworks display in the Iowa Great Lakes took on an added twist when Mother Nature decided to put on her own fireworks show.

A thunderstorm with intense lightning and heavy rain doused everyone watching the event, which still went on but wound up getting started about a half hour earlier than planned because of the impending storm.

That decision drew criticism from some who say they missed out on some of the show and that there should have been more notification.

Others felt the show should have been postponed.

But Tom Kuhlman, Executive Director of the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce says things were already too far along to do that.

And he says the display, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, would have been ruined once it got wet. Those involved in that display, along with others held annually in the Iowa Great Lakes, met Thursday to come up with some protocol in the event a similar situation should ever again present itself. Better communication between show organizers and the pyro technician is one of the priorities.

In the past they’ve relied on cell phones, but officials say an extremely high call volume present on some of the busier weekends in the lakes area can make cell service unpredictable.

So they plan to use two-way radios in the future.

They’re also looking into coming up with a retractable cover for the fireworks barge.
