Volunteer discovers record-breaking dinosaur bone

(CNN) -

A historic find in western Colorado.

A volunteer unearthed a giant dinosaur bone during a dig near the Utah border.

It was finally removed from the site last week, after five summers of excavation.

Experts say it is the largest known Apatosaurus femur ever discovered.

The bone measures 6 feet 7 inches and 2,800 pounds .and likely belonged to a beast 80 to 90 feet long.

"It's very exciting. This is really a once-in-a-lifetime find -- to find the largest bone of a particular animal," said Julie McHugh, a Paleontologist Curator said.

Workers are now stabilizing and preserving the bone.

The museum of western Colorado's dinosaur journey museum oversaw the excavation.
