Northeast NE Chapter of the America Red Cross encourages new blood donors to roll up their sleeves

The Northeast Nebraska Chapter of the America Red Cross is doing their part to minimize the blood shortage across the nation.

In the last 11 weeks, the American Red Cross has saw blood donations decrease by eight-percent nationwide and in Nebraska donations are down three-percent during that same time frame.

Red Cross officials say summers are usually a slow donation time because of everyone always seems to be on the go and summers are usually vacation season for many folks.

Norfolk's Red Cross Donor Recruiter says the best advice she has for those giving blood for the first time, is to make sure you are hydrated.

Wendy Benson, the Red Cross Donor Recruiter said, ”Eat some food with Iron in it, bring your ID, but the big thing is hydration. Hydration in the summer, we get really low on that, so we just want to make sure people are hydrated.”

The Norfolk's Red Cross office is scheduled to take blood donations every Thursday from 11:30 in the morning to 5:30 in the evening. They have also scheduled an additional blood drive tomorrow in the Walmart Parking lot in Norfolk, and it will run from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
