The Spencer Golf & Country Club has hosted the NW Iowa Amateur since 1921.
SPENCER, Iowa (KTIV) -
The Northwest Iowa Amateur is the second oldest golf tournament in Iowa. The 93rd edition started Thursday in Spencer with 355 golfers from 18 states.
The Spencer Golf and Country Club has hosted the event since 1921. It's the only 72-hole championship played in the state of Iowa. Golfers range in age from 13 to 80 years old and everyone plays two qualifying rounds of 18 holes each before the cut is made. Prizes are awarded to the twenty lowest 72 hole scores.
Organizers are proud of their long tradition, which attracts many of the top amateurs in the Midwest.
"The quality of the college kids' play, it's impressive to see their talent and then the support from the guys who have played this 30 or 40 years," said PGA professional Adam Coates.
"And we know that 2014 will be just like every other year, very successful." said tournament director Bill Zinn.
"It's just something that takes a long time to develop a tournament like this. You couldn't start this a couple years ago and have anything close to this," added Coates.
"We get to see the young golfers from college and they do a wonderful job." said Zinn.
There will be a cut after 36 holes to the lowest 24 scores and ties. The 36-hole championship flight will be held on Sunday.
