Sgt. Bluff-Luton lost a 2-1 decision to Dallas Center-Grimes in the 3A semifinals on Friday.
DES MOINES, Iowa (KTIV) -
Dallas Center-Grimes returns to the Class 3A state championship game for the second time in three years with a 2-1 win over Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the semifinals Friday afternoon at Principal Park.
The sixth-seeded Mustangs — who won it all in 2012 — knocked off the third seed (in nine innings) and second seed to get to the title game this year.
Trailing by one run in the seventh, SBL (25-12) led the inning off with a double from Cody Selig. After a pop-out bunt and strikeout, Conner Prescott reached first on an infield single, advancing the runner to third. But with two-on and two-outs, a pop fly to right field ended game.
DCG (24-14) scored both its runs in the top of the third. Austin Kloewer and Callen Bertrand both singled to start the inning. Jacob Mueller’s sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third with one out. After Tyler Pierson loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch, Justin Carlyle singled in Kloewer and Bertrand to make the score 2-0.
In the fourth, Thomas Wisecup singled to lead off for the SBL. Bryce Hanson tripled two batters later, scoring Wisecup, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Three pitchers worked the mound for the Mustangs, allowing one run while scattering five hits.
Max Balzer (6-3) earned the win for DCG. Balzer pitched 5.1 innings, giving up one run on four hits, two walks and five strikeouts.
Pierson picked up his third save of the season, giving up two hits and no runs in 1.2 innings of relief. Pierson gave up both hits in the bottom of the seventh, but worked out of the jam, getting a fly out to end the game with runners on the corners.
Hanson (6-3) pitched seven strong innings for SBL, giving up just two earned runs on four hits, four base-on-balls while striking out 10.
DCG advances to the Class 3A state championship and will take on fifth-seeded Davenport Assumption (25-15) Saturday at 6 p.m. at Principal Park.
