Siouxland's youngsters get an early start on being healthy

An athletic group of youngsters got a very healthy start, bright and early this morning, thanks to the folks at Hy-Vee.

Olsen Field on the Morningside College campus played host to Sioux City's first Hy-Vee 5k and one mile fun run for kids.

Hy-Vee typically hosts triathlons for kids, as a part of their Kids Fit program, focused on promoting healthy activity for youth across the Midwest.

Today's race allows kids who don't like to bike or swim to still participate in the fun.

"We want to build a stage that's so big and so grandiose that when these kids come out to an event, whether it's our event or it's any other event, all they can think of is how cool it was and how it was the best day of their summer. We want to get kids addicted to something so positive like this," Michael Zimmerman, Kids Fit Director.

The Hy-Vee 5k and fun run crew have been traveling across the Midwest, hosting the races.

Their next stop will be in Des Moines.
