Jury selection begins in Sioux City double murder trial

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Jury selection will start around one o’clock Tuesday afternoon in the double murder trial of Juan Nino Estrada, the man accused of killing two people and injuring a third on Sioux City's west side.

More than 60 people packed the courtroom in the Woodbury County Courthouse Tuesday morning.

They were given a questionnaire to fill out and instructed to return at one o'clock.

At that time, Judge Jeffrey Paulson said 25 potential jurors would be chosen to answer questions from attorneys.

The rest of the group will be asked to come back Wednesday morning.

At that time they'll try to whittle the jury panel down to 35 and eventually 15, 12 jurors and three alternates.

They'll have to decide whether Juan Nino Estrada is guilty of first degree murder in the deaths of 35-year-old Yolanda Valdez of Orange City and 33-year-old Michael Delgado Sioux City.

The prosecution accuses Nino Estrada of shooting them at 507 West 27th Street last November.

A third victim, 33-year-old Luis Sanchez was stabbed and shot, but survived.

Authorities say Nino Estrada and Sanchez lived in the home and a fight broke out between the two.

Police have said drugs were a factor in the fight.

We'll be in the courtroom and bring you the very latest tonight at five, six, and ten
