Students learn about healthcare careers at "Medicine Camp"

PRIMGHAR, Iowa (KTIV) - Chances are you've been to the hospital as a patient, or a visitor. But, have you ever worked there?

Middle school students from O'Brien County got hands-on experiences at a Baum Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar, Iowa.

"Medicine Camp" allowed the students to learn about the various jobs a doctor, or a nurse, does on a daily basis.

The goal of this camp is to spark an interest in the various healthcare careers.

"I want to be a doctor, a family physician," said Angela Nyunt.

"A surgical tech or a nurse," said Grace Fuhrman.

"A cardiac surgeon," said Richard Nyunt.

The camp was complete with mock patients to show students what would happen in certain situations.

This mock situation involved the collision of a car and a moped.

The students followed the mock patients through their hospital experience as they visited multiple departments like the ER, OR and X-Ray room.

"It's a lot of fun and I am learning a lot" said Angela Nyunt.

The "Medicine Camp" is the first one hosted by Baum Mercy Hospital, Iowa State University and O'Brien County Extension.
