Health officials in NE Nebraska continue to investigate two confirmed cases of TB

NORFOLK, NE (KTIV/US92) - Public health officials in Northeast Nebraska are continuing to investigate two confirmed cases of tuberculosis in the region. The Elkhorn Logan Valley Health Department in Norfolk, Nebraska has contacted those they believe have had contact with a student with TB at Park Avenue Christian School in Norfolk.

Gina Uhing, Director of Elkhorn Logan Valley Health Department said, “The time of the year that this happened and when the students weren't in session, it's a fairly low possibility that the students that were with the case last spring when school dismissed, this would be a very low risk situation.”

Uhing said that the Elkhorn Logan Valley Health Department is working with health officials with the Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department, which serves Wayne, Cedar, Thurston, and Dixon Counties who are investigating a separate case of TB in their service area. Health officials say that the two cases may have a common connection that are being investigated.

Uhing said, “Both of those people went to a common church, so the church is being tested just basically a precautionary measure, they don't know if either of these two cases potentially spread to anyone else.”

Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department officials would not disclose the location of the case within their service area or the location of the church in question citing Nebraska Confidentiality Statutes. They did say that the case has been treated for some time now, and is nearing the end of the treatment for TB.
