Great Lakes Communication Corporation expands data center with new facility in Lake Park, IA

From smart phones, to computers, technology is a part of our everyday lives.

But, not everyone has access to broadband internet where they need it.

A million dollar expansion will help give that to folks living in the Iowa Great Lakes.

Great Lakes Communication Corporation, or GLCC, has expanded its data center to a new facility in Lake Park, Iowa.

"We are a provider of long distance telephone and telephone lines for conference providers," Kellie Beneke, Great Lakes Communication President said.

GLCC, under its retail name IGL TeleConnect, provides local land line telephone and internet services. It will serve cities and towns in the Iowa Great Lakes area.

"We provide service to the under served area, the rural community who had really slow internet or no internet," Beneke said.

"We have a goal of connecting every acre in having high speed broadband for the whole state," Governor Terry Branstad said.

Work began October of 2013 to build the $1.4 million, 2,500 square foot building, which boasts 10-inch thick exterior walls, and interior walls that measure 8-inches thick.

The Great Lakes Communication Corporation data center is engineered to withstand an EF-5 tornado.

"It gives security for companies from around the United States to strategically locate out here in northwest Iowa.  We have tornadoes, we have to prepare so that business interruption doesn't happen," company representative, John Zulk said.

If the power goes out, two generators will start up within 10 seconds. Just one of the generators can provide the building with all the power it needs.  Not to mention this facility is good for the environment.

"We have two 80 ton chiller that run on free cooling.  Anytime the ambient air temperature is 45 degrees or colder, the compressors do not run so it's very green," said Kellie Beneke, Great Lakes Communication President.

So what's next for this company?

"Two years ago we started up a DBA called IGL TeleConnect, where we do local telephone and internet service.  We provide those service to Milford and Lake Park and we are expanding to the Spirit Lake area," said Kellie Beneke, Great Lakes Communication President.

The Great Lakes Communication Corporation is a family owned business which was founded in 2005.
