Customers reacts to closure of longtime Sioux City restaurant

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - A Sioux City staple has closed. The Green Gables restaurant has shut its doors after opening 85 years ago.

Owner Jennifer Vollmer said the decision was one made by her family, and was motivated by recent financial problems.

The restaurant has been located at the corner of Pierce and 18th streets since 1929.

Community members say they were "shocked" when they learned the news.

"I used to take my children there, said Linda Jensen, a longtime Green Gables customer.. "I took my grandchildren there and then my kids took their kids. I just think it's sad."

"Pretty shocked to see that sign on the door," said John Vlahoulis, a longtime Green Gables customer. "A long time Sioux City establishment that's been around for a long time, and now it's gone."

Local businesses say they are also disappointed.

Manager of "20th Street Tap" Dusty McDougle says the restaurant's closure will have an economic impact on local businesses.

"When they do business, we do business," said Dusty McDougle, Manager of 20th Street Tap in Sioux City. "If they slow down, we all slow down.  It's back and forth to everybody."
