Explorers keep playoff hopes alive by beating Gary

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -  The Sioux City Explorers kept their slim American Association playoff hopes alive with an 8-6 win over Gary-Southshore on Tuesday at Lewis and Clark Park. The X's are 16-7 in August.

Gary is now tied with Lincoln for first place in the Central Division at 50-44. The X's are five games behind with six games left in the season. Sioux City has won 12 of their last 16 games and are 45-49 overall. Sioux City will close the season with four games in Lincoln.

Sioux City scored first in the second inning. Dillon Usiak's two-out double brought in Tommy Mendonca for a 1-0 lead.

Sioux City padded their lead in the third when Peter Barrows connected for a bases-loaded double to score Oscar Mesa and Tim Colwell to make it 3-0. Andres Perez and Amos Ramon also had RBI's for a 5-0 lead.

The Railcats came back to take a 6-5 lead but Sioux City scored three more runs in the sixth to reclaim the lead for good.

Kenny Long picked up his second win of the season in relief of starting pitcher John Straka. Alex Burnett earned his first save of the season by pitching a perfect ninth inning.

Game two of the three game series is Wednesday night at 7:05.
