Legendary comedienne suffered cardiac arrest during medical procedure at New York clinic

(NBC News) -

Legendary comedienne Joan Rivers was rushed to New York City's Mount Sinai Hospital Thursday morning after she stopped breathing during what's being described as "minor surgery" on her vocal cords at a local physician's office.

The hospital confirmed Rivers' presence, but did not offer an update on her condition, only saying "her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support".

The 81-year-old has appeared to be in good health in recent days. She participated in a signing for her most recent book on Wednesday, and promoted the work earlier this month during a visit to "Late Night with Seth Meyers".
