Sioux City students learn a lesson about giving

Freshman English students at North High School are learning about local non-profit organizations in the Siouxland area.

They spent the afternoon speaking with nearly 20 organizations including Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army and the Food Bank.

With the holidays around the corner, the students say they are inspired to give back after learning about the different groups.

"It's almost Thanksgiving. So I think I can hurry up and give back to the community before Thanksgiving so I have time to spend time with my family," said 14-year-old Herbie Pettiford.

The students will be choosing their favorite organization to study and write a paper on.

They will also produce a public service announcement.

Teachers will be selecting the best PSAs to be pitched to the organizations so that they may feature the students' work.
