Siouxland companies donate over 100 pairs of shoes to Goodwill

Goodwill of the Great Plains is always looking for donations, but Tuesday morning they received one that will help dozens of Siouxlanders.

It's something that many of us take for granted...a pair of shoes. But, there's people everywhere who can't afford a new pair when they need it most. So big donations like this are making an impact all around Siouxland.

For decades, Goodwill of the Great Plains has been the only Goodwill branch to have their annual Shoe and Mitten Drive. Tuesday, they received over 100 pairs of new shoes that will be put towards that drive.

"It's been many, many years since we've received anything like this with shoes, but it's wonderful. It's really needed," said Goodwill of the Great Plains President, John Hantla.

Fastenal, an industrial and construction supply house, have a shoe contract with Wells Blue Bunny. Since Blue Bunny no longer needed the shoes, the two companies decided to donate every unneeded pair of the new, black industrial shoes to Goodwill.

"Obviously some of us are more fortunate then others and we always need to give back to the community. The hope is that these shoes get used by someone who can take advantage of them," said Fastenal district manager, Marty Werden.

The shoes will not only be put towards the Shoe and Mitten Drive, but also for those who need work clothes. So every pair will benefit someone in Siouxland.

"It helps the community. There's a lot of people in need in this community and it's really nice that we have a lot of community-based businesses here who are engaged and invested in what we are trying to do here at Goodwill of the Great Plains," said Goodwill chief financial officer, Jerry Favors.

Fastenal's district manager says they just wanted the shoes to go to a good home, and Goodwill is now that place. One of the reasons Fastenal decided to make the donation was because they saw the KTIV coverage of the Shoe and Mitten Drive two weeks ago.

You can keep donating those new pairs of shoes, socks, scarves, caps and mittens throughout the fall season up until the Shoe and Mitten Party in December.
