Austin Roberts' autopsy is completed; funeral arrangements finalized

SPENCER, Iowa (KTIV) -

An autopsy is now complete on the body of 18-year-old Austin Roberts.

He's the Spencer High School student, who collapsed during the championship round of Saturday's Spencer Invitational.

Roberts never got back up after he collapsed.

Tuesday, the state medical examiner conducted an autopsy on Roberts' body.

Results are pending further investigation.

A visitation for Austin Roberts begins at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 27, at the Spencer High School Gym.

Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m., on Monday, December 28, at the Spencer High School Gym.

Spencer Schools superintendent, Terry Hemann, says a service for Austin Roberts has not been set yet.

Spencer High School has outside counselors on hand for all students and staff Monday and Tuesday.

Hemann says community members have been bringing in food and water for the students Monday while they go through grief counseling.

Both boys and girls home basketball games set for Monday night have been canceled due to the death of Austin Roberts.


This statement is being distributed on behalf of the Clay County Medical Examiner.  

Due to the recent tragic death of Austin Roberts, Clay County medical examiner Dr. David Robison has turned the case over to the state medical examiner’s office.

According to Dr. Robison, preliminary investigation points to a natural cause of death. An autopsy and laboratory analysis will be performed to determine the official cause of death. Once determined, results of the investigation will be released to the family. Austin passed away Saturday evening December 19.


A Spencer, Iowa high school wrestler died after collapsing at the Tigers' home invitational on Saturday.

Spencer Community Schools superintendent Terry Hemann said that senior Austin Roberts collapsed during the championship match of the 220-pound weight division at the Spencer Invitational on Saturday, as he and his opponent were walking back to the center of the mat.

Spencer Hospital officials confirmed that Roberts passed away at the hospital on Saturday night.

Roberts placed eighth at the Class 2A state tournament last year. He was ranked sixth in Class 3A this season.

A youth wrestling tournament (preschool through eighth grade) scheduled for Sunday in Spencer has been canceled.

A crisis team was meeting at Spencer High school on Sunday, offering grief counseling for students and faculty.

The Spencer Tailtwisters have set up a GoFundMe site to help with Roberts' medical and funeral expenses.

Hemann says that school will be in session on Monday.
