SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (KTIV/KUOO) -
The use of any form of tobacco products, including smoking and electronic cigarettes or “vaping” devices, may soon be off limits at city parks and outdoor recreational facilities in Spirit Lake.
The city’s recreational trails would also be affected along with associated restrooms and parking lots and shelter houses. The city council earlier this week held the first reading of a proposed ordinance to that affect.
Spirit Lake City Administrator/Attorney Greg Owens said, ”I did some research and found out that this is something that’s becoming more and more common across the country, even in large million plus population metropolitan centers in the United States have adopted this type of ordinance.”
The proposed ordinance would also pertain to the area around the Spirit Lake Public Library.
City Administrator/Attorney Greg Owens told the council it makes sense for the city to adopt the ordinance, given the fact Spirit Lake was designated a Blue Zones Community by Wellmark, and for the other health-based initiatives that are underway in the city.
