SIOUX CITY (KTIV) -

UPDATE:

Liborio Martinez-Rubio appeared in court today after he was arrested in connection to a homicide.

26-year-old Javier Cherone arrived at Mercy Medical Center Wednesday evening with a single gunshot wound. Cherone would later die of his injuries

The following investigation led Sioux City Police to a residence on 1609 Jones Street. Evidence in the yard of that residence led detectives to obtain a search warrant of the house.

There, authorities located multiple firearms, illegal drugs, and a large amount of cash. Today, those items were submitted to the court as evidence.

The owner of the property, 60-yr-old Liborio Martinez-Rubio, was arrested and charged with intent to deliver methamphetamine and felon in possession of a firearm, among other charges.

The firearms and the drugs collected lead investigators to believe the shooting to be drug related.

The bond for Martinez-Rubio has been set at $500,000. He is due to appear in court again on January 22 for his preliminary hearing.

Sioux City's first homicide of 2018. Just ten days into the new year.

"Sioux City police officers responded to Mercy Medical Center in a report of a male party that had a single gunshot wound," said Sioux City Police Chief Mueller. "Javier Cherone would shortly thereafter be pronounced deceased."

After speaking with an individual that transported Cherone to the hospital late Wednesday night, their investigation led them to a home at 1609 Jones Street.

Evidence in the yard of the residence led detectives to obtain a search warrant of the house.

"Illegal drugs were located, firearms were located, and several items of interest during that search," said Mueller.

Owner of the property, 60-yr-old Liborio Martinez-Rubio, was arrested and charged with intent to deliver methamphetamine and felon in possession of a firearm, among other charges.

Detectives say they're convinced the crime occurred at the house on Jones Street, but are unsure of Martinez-Rubio's involvement.

"At this time there are no charges for him, specifically related to the shooting," said Sgt. Ryan Bertrand.

Martinez-Rubio's current bond is set at $500,000.

Detectives say there is no known motive for the homicide but speculate that it's drug-related.

Two guns recovered at the crime scene were listed as stolen.

Police say Cherone also had a firearm on him when he arrived at the hospital.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The incident is still under investigation.
