Omaha district to release updated sex education materials

Posted: Updated:

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - An Omaha school district will soon release information on materials that will be used in sex education classes.

The Omaha World-Herald reports that Millard Public Schools officials are in the final phases of updating the sex education curriculum for health classes from prekindergarten through high school.

The proposed textbooks, videos and other materials will be available for public inspection next month. District staff will recommend materials to the school board after the public review.

The materials will cover human growth, development and sex education.

The board says it's committed to teaching a "pro-abstinence" sex education curriculum. The curriculum will also avoid discussions of gender identity, after Omaha Public Schools' decision to include the topic in its curriculum sparked debate.

The new curriculum could be implemented for the 2018-19 school year.
