Union, school district reach tentative agreement on new contract for Sioux City teachers
SIOUX CITY (KTIV) -
There is a tentative agreement between teachers and the Sioux City Community School District.
The agreement is for three years. The average increase in teacher pay is 2.2% or $1,401. Last year, the average teacher salary was $63,637. Next year, it will be $65,038. It includes the controversial 6th period assignment reductions for 300 teachers.
Negotiators say there's another hurdle to clear. "They have to get their votes into the office by Monday morning at 9 o'clock so we haven't ratified the agreement but we have what is called a tentative agreement," said Brenda Zahner, Iowa State Education Association Regional Director. "A combination of spending authority, not laying off teachers, trying to maintain permissive language and trying to negotiate a teacher contract that gives everyone some type of a raise, this is where we're at," said Mike McTaggert, Sioux City Community School Board Vice President
If ratified by the union, the school board is expected to take up the contract at their meeting next week.
