IOWA CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Last season was a disaster for the Hawkeye basketball team. Iowa finished 14-19 overall and just 4-14 in the Big Ten. They're already working hard to get better.

Four starters are back but the defense needs to improve. According to the Ken-Pom rankings, Iowa was 249th in the nation in adjusted defense.

The Hawks got good news in the off-season, as leading scorer and rebounder Tyler Cook took his name out of the NBA draft, as did Isaiah Moss.

Head coach Fran McCaffery is focusing on drills to improve strength, speed and agility.

"We're working a lot on the defensive end and we're just competing more," said forward Tyler Cook. "At the end of the day you can do as many drills as you want to you got to go out there and compete. I think us doing a lot of that this summer is going to help us."

"Obviously we knew what we lacked last year," said forward Cordell Pemsl. "We've got guys on this team that can score but when we really get our defense going is when we're hard to stop. That's definitely something we wanted to focus on this summer and we've been doing a great job of it these first couple weeks."

The Hawkeyes finished 11th in the Big Ten standings last season. Iowa's first game is November 8 against Missouri-Kansas City.
