Spencer, Iowa, food bank feeling summertime crunch

SPENCER, IA (KTIV) -

Just as summer heats up, so does the need at food banks across the country.

The need is being felt at the food bank at Upper Des Moines Opportunity's in Spencer, Iowa.

Officials say their shelves have taken a hit this summer and they're running short on essential items.

Things like cereal, pasta, hamburger helper and spaghetti sauce are constantly in need.

"We've seen an increase need with kids home in the summer," said Dawn Dahm, Outreach Specialist for Clay County UDMO, "They're not eating at school in the morning and at lunch; so parents are having to buy more groceries which is hard on the pocket book."

Dahm says people don't often think of summer as a hard time for food banks.

"We see a lot of food donations come in over the holidays, which is great," said Dawn Dahm, "And we try to stretch that out until we see a pick up again of donations and we're not usually this low at this time."

Dahm says they've served about 600 families in Clay County this year; but the food bank isn't all they offer.

"We do the Christmas program, we're getting ready for our back to school program," said Dahm, "We have coats for kids that also supplies snow pants to families. We have a baby room that gives new moms diapers and things like that if they'd run out and don't have the money to purchase it."
