Volunteers fill backpacks for low-income families

Getting ready for Back to School may not be ideal for low-income families.

One local organization is doing its best to make that transition a little easier.

Lucky Leprechauns today gathered more than 100 volunteers to fill backpacks with school supplies for students.

Donations and grants came from organizations such as MRHD, Scheels, Premiere Bankcard, and others.

The volunteers filled backpacks for more than 300 needy kids from 22 Siouxland schools, which is 51 more children than last year.

"So we work directly with teachers and they let us know of the need. We meet that need and the teacher gives it to the families. So no one feels different or singled out. But yet they have what they need. That's whats important," says Kelly Nashleanas, Exec. Director Lucky Leprechauns

The Backpack Drive is just one of many events organized by Lucky Leprechauns.

They also gather coats and boots for the winter, and toys at Christmas.

If you would like to contribute, a fund is set up at Great Southern Bank.
