Agriprocessors human resource employee pleads guilty

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KTIV) - United States Attorney Matt M. Dummermuth announced today that a woman who helped hire illegal aliens at Agriprocessors, Inc., in Postville, Iowa, pled guilty today in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Karina Pilar Freund, age 29, from Fayette, Iowa, was convicted of one misdemeanor count of aiding and abetting a pattern or practice of hiring undocumented aliens.

According to an Information filed on December 9, 2008, in federal court, Freund aided the unlawful employment of aliens knowing the aliens were not authorized to work in the United States. Information previously disclosed in court identified Freund as a human resource department employee at Agriprocessors in Postville.

Sentencing before United States Magistrate Judge Jon S. Scoles will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Freund remains free on bond pending sentencing. Freund faces a possible maximum sentence of 6 months' imprisonment or a term of probation of not more than 5 years, a fine of up to $3,000 for each unauthorized alien involved in the offense, and a $10 special assessment.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Peter Deegan, C.J. Williams, and Matt Cole and was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
