Highway panel divides stimulus money

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The state Transportation Commission says counties and large cities in South Dakota should get $16 million from a federal stimulus package.

The commission decided Thursday to divide the local money under the same formula it uses to distribute other federal funds to cities and counties. Counties will share $8.5 million, while the state's largest 15 cities will get $7.7 million.

The commission rejected a request to double the amount of money for local governments. Commissioners said their first obligation is to fund state highways and bridges. The local share comes from a $183 million total package.
