Remsen St. Mary’s falls in 8-Player semifinal matchup.

CEDAR FALLS, IA (KTIV) - It’s a game every boy growing up in Iowa dreams of being in. The state semifinals and ultimately finals in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. But not everyone can play in that finals game as the Remsen St. Mary’s Hawks found out.

The Hawks lost a hard fought battle in the semifinal round of the 8-Player Iowa High School Athletic Association State Tournament to the River Hawks of Easton Valley.

Remsen St. Mary’s struck first with a 15 yard touchdown pass from Cael Ortmann to Ryan Willman to jump out to an 8-0 lead.

It wouldn’t be until the second quarter when Easton Valley would respond with 21 unanswered points. The first coming off of a one yard run from Charlie Simpson to make it 8-7. Then the River Hawks hit on a five yard pass from Conor Gruver to Aiden Gruver to go up 14-8. After that Conor Gruver connected with Carson Fuegan for an 18 yard TD to put Easton Valley up 21-8.

But, Remsen St. Mary’s battled back a 42 yard touchdown from Ortmann to Ryan Willman cut the Easton Valley lead to five making it 21-16. After that the Hawks took the ball with little time left in the half and Ortmann slung a 31 yarder to Brenden Fisch for the score, to give RSM a 22-21 lead at the half.

In the second half Remsen St. Mary’s extended their lead with an Ortmann run from four yards out, to go up 30-21.

Then it was Easton Valleys turn to battle back a Charlie Simpson 45 yard touchdown carry made it 30-28. And, then a Carson Fuegan 11 yard run made it 35-30.

The Hawks would score again on a 62 yard toss from Ortmann to Willman to go up 36-35. But in the end it would be Easton Valley who would make the final big play as Conor Gruver connected with Andin Farrell to cap off a ten play drive and take the lead 42-36.
