West Lyon advances to Class 2A title game after overtime thriller
CEDAR FALLS (KTIV) - The West Lyon Wildcats came into their game today looking for a shot to win their second state championship in three years. It took a little extra work but the Wildcats got it done.
West Lyon had to get past Williamsburg if they wanted a shot at the title.
Williamsburg started off the scoring on a 61 yard pass from Cade Ritchie to Jake Weber to take a 7-0 lead in the first. In the second quarter West Lyon responded when Jaxon Meyer to the ball in from 2 yards out to tie the game up at 7.
The game would stay tied until the fourth quarter when Meyer powered his way into the endzone from a yard out to take a 14-7 lead for the Wildcats. But Williamsburg battled back when Cade Ritchie connected with Madox Doehrmann from 15 yards out to tie the game at 14 and send it into overtime.
In OT the Wildcats came up big on defense when who else but, Jackson Meyer came up with an interception on the 10 yard line to end the Williamsburg possession. Then Meyer proceeded to score the game winning touchdown on a 5 yard run to send the Wildcats to the championship.
“First we were going to take the wind but there’s no wind, so to heck with that, we felt good getting the ball last and getting that pic and getting the ball at the ten yard line,” says Jay Rozeboom West Lyon Head Coach. “I think our guys did a good job of smelling that endzone and getting it in there. "
“It’s just crazy since that loss against Central Lyon last year that’s just been motivation after motivation for us to replicate what was done two years ago but in our own way on our own team,” says Easton Fleshman West Lyon Senior. “And, just leading the proper way and doing the correct things that need to get done.”
West Lyon will face off against Southeast Valley in the Class 2A title game. On Friday November 19th at 10 AM in the UNI-DOME.
