SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - A Sioux City road is back open at this hour after being closed Friday night due to a gas leak.

The gas leak happened after a car hit a building in the 5400 block of Sergeant Road, near the Sunnybrook Shine Car Wash.

Authorities at the scene say at about 4:40 p.m. a driver lost control coming off of the Highway 20 bypass, causing them to strike the building. This resulted in significant damage to the building.

Authorities say alcohol may have been a factor in the accident but the driver is not detained at this time.

“We communicate really well with the fire department. We really let them take the lead on something like this. We are directed by them. We set up a perimeter for them, and keep cars out of the area and people out of the area and let them do their thing,” said Sergeant Scott Hatting, SCPD. “This is more their specialty than ours. So, communication is great on that and we had plenty of cars that were able to respond quickly and fortunately nobody was hurt.”

Sergeant Road was shut down for less than an hour as a precaution, while the gas leak was stopped.

The driver was cited for failure to maintain control.
