Second half rally falls short as Pierce loses to Columbus Lakeview in class C-1 title game
LINCOLN, NE (KTIV) - A second half comeback falls just short as Pierce falls to Columbus Lakeview in the class C-1 state championship game in Lincoln, Nebraska on Tuesday.
Lakeview jumped out to a 17-0 lead midway through the second quarter. That’s when the Bluejays scored their first points of the day. Abram Scholting connected with Michael Kruntorad on a 72 yard touchdown pass. That made it 17-6.
Columbus Lakeview added another touchdown to take a 24-6 lead into halftime.
Pierce fired back in the second half. Scholting hit Matt Christensen on a 36 yard touchdown pass. Pierce cut the deficit to 24-12.
After a Vikings touchdown, Pierce responded. Scholting ran it in from 11 yards out. That made it a 31-19 ballgame.
With just over six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Pierce made it a one score game. Scholting finds Kruntorad again. A 25 yard touchdown strike cuts the Lakeview lead to just 31-25.
But the Vikings put the game on ice on their ensuing drive. Kolby Blaser found the endzone from 10 yards out and Columbus Lakeview tops the defending champions to win the class C-1 state title.
“We got stung too many times in the first half. Everything that could kind of go against us went against us and we were playing catch up the rest of the way,” said head coach Mark Brahmer. “But we’re really proud of guys fight and effort they put forth. Really, there’s a lot of teams, a lot of individuals that would have just turned around and ran from that kind of a situation.”
“Yeah a lot of people doubted us This senior class was 0-12 in Junior high,” said Pierce Senior Benjamin Brahmer. “Nobody thought we would be good when they were seniors. But we fought we worked this whole summer and we got here.”
Pierce finishes their season 10-3.
