SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Thanksgiving is just days away and many people will be out on the roads traveling to see friends and family for the holiday. Local law enforcement in Sioux City have a few recommendations when it comes to staying safe this year for Thanksgiving.

Authorities said while we will, fortunately, have good weather for traveling, be sure to keep in mind, if you’re traveling around dusk or after dark, look out for deer.

They said there are many deer versus car accidents this time of year.

Other tips for driving this Thanksgiving include making sure to give yourself enough time to arrive at your destination. Don’t rush -- and let people know when you’re leaving -- and when you’re expected to arrive.

Sgt. Jeremy McClure with the Sioux City Police Department said another big thing they see around Thanksgiving is impaired driving.

“It is a busy time of the year and there’s always a concern about increased impaired drivers during this week. Especially the night before Thanksgiving we see a lot of people out at the bars. So, please. Get home safe. It’s more important that you get home safely and have that good holiday than it is to drive home drunk. And risk getting a ticket or even worse an accident and get seriously injured or killed,” said Sgt. McClure.

McClure added they will have patrols out looking specifically for drunk drivers.
