LINCOLN, NE (KTIV) - Norfolk Catholic gets out to an early lead but falls to Archbishop Bergan 49-20 in the class C-2 state championship game at Memorial Stadium on Tuesday.

Norfolk Catholic scored the first points of the game in the first quarter. Karter Kerkman ran it into the endzone from 16 yards out to give them a 7-0 lead.

But on the first play of the ensuing drive from Archbishop Bergan, Koa McIntyre connected with Lucas Pruss on an 80 yard touchdown pass to the tie the game. That started a streak of five straight touchdown and 35 unanswered points to give Archbishop Bergan a 35-7 lead in the second quarter.

Norfolk Catholic did find the endzone late in the first half on a Carter Janssen to Brennen Kelly touchdown pass to make it 35-13.

Late in the fourth quarter, Kerkman found the endzone for the second time on a 63 yard touchdown run but Archbishop Bergan would go on to win 49-20.

“My class specifically, we were always saying never get used to losing, never get used to losing,” said junior Mason Timmerman. “And I’m glad we didn’t get used to losing because I mean to get to memorial field that’s a treat in it’s own. This is every kids dream right here so hopefully we win it next season.”

“I think more than anything else you tell them you are proud of them. It’s very hard to get to this game you gotta have things go for you. You gotta stay injury free, you’ve got to be able to win playoff games. You can’t have an off week,” said head coach Jeff Bellar. “I’ll tell our guys how proud I am of them. I don’t like losing a game but it’s a hard game to get to.”

Norfolk Catholic finishes their season 11-2.
