Mustangs Stampede past Kansas Wesleyan to semifinals
SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - The Morningside Mustangs were coming into their quarterfinal matchup with Kansas Wesleyan undefeated and feeling good. After winning a shootout against Ottawa Arizona. Their opponents the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes moved to the quarterfinals via a forfeit from Indiana Wesleyan.
And the Mustangs stayed hot in this one, scoring on their first five drives of the game. First Joe Dolincheck connected with Austin Johnson for a 35-yard score to take a 7-0 lead. Then later in the first Ryan Cole wrapped up an 11 play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0.
With around 90 seconds left in the first quarter, Dolincheck found Johnson again, this time for a 28-yard score to end the first quarter up 21-0.
In the second quarter, Kansas Wesleyan got on the board with an Isaiah Randalle 10 yard jaunt to make it 21-7.
But, then Morningside would rattle off 17 unanswered points to wrap up the half. First Dolincheck slung one to Reid Jurgensmeier from 16 yards out to make it 28-7. Then the senior found Cole for a 29-yard score to make it 35-7. And finally, Chase Carter ended the half with a 33-yard field goal to make it 38-7 at the half.
The second half was more of the same. Morningside scored on another Cole 2 yard run to make it 45-7. And then Dolincheck hit Sione Tuifua from 4 yards out to make it 52-7.
Kansas Wesleyan put up 7 more when Drevon Macon caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from Isaiah Randalle to make it 52-14.
The Mustangs would respond with a Matt Strecker touchdown run near the goal line to take a 58-14 lead.
Kansas Wesleyan would add 7 more before this one wrapped up at 58-21.
Morningside will host fellow GPAC competitor Northwestern on December 4th kickoff is set for noon at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
