SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - With winter weather expected, police are warning drivers to take caution on the roads.

Drivers are encouraged to leave their homes earlier, and allow for plenty of time to get to work or school. Another big tip is to remember to use light pressure on your brakes to avoid sliding.

“Just use a lighter foot. The heavier you press the brakes it can cause the car to go into a slide,” said Todd Peterson, a captain with the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office.

In South Sioux City, Neb., Officer Dave Heinemann says that car crashes could increase by 25% during the first winter storm.

“Just because people don’t slow down enough and can’t stop like they normally do,” said Heinemann.

Should you find yourself stuck in the snow, kitty litter can be your best friend. Heinemann says any sandy or gravel substance will help you gain traction. But it’s important to clear some snow away from your car first.

“My grandma always has some (kitty litter) in her car for that reason,” he said.

Should you find yourself in a fender bender, it’s important to alert the police, even during winter weather. But make sure to move your car from the roadway first, if possible. Heinemann said police can still determine what happened in an accident, even if the cars have been moved from the scene.

“We always tell people, ‘if the vehicles are moveable, move them somewhere safe off the side of the road that way the rest of the motorists can travel safely and hopefully not cause another accident,” said Heinemann.
