SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - It’s important to have a plan in case a fire breaks out in your home, during the holidays.

Sioux City Fire Rescue has a compressive home inspection program to do just that. It’s called SAFE Home inspection.

You can call fire prevention at (712) 279-6377 and they will do a walk-through of your home, to see if your spaces are safe. The inspection is free of charge.

“We look for things that may start a fire, first and foremost. But we also look for things that may be tripping hazards or any other hazards in the home that can lead to injury. It’s nonpunitive, meaning that we’re not going to force you to make any changes. These are simply recommendations,” said Capt. Ryan Collins.

Captain Collins said they educate homeowners, during the inspection, as they look for different things in the house.

“It’s just a different perspective inside the home. Getting another set of eyes on things. We know the program works. We know the program is actually saving lives and property,” said the captain.

As part of the inspection, Collins said they will also install smoke alarms if needed. He said between the SAFE Home inspection and another program the department has in place, they’ve installed nearly 9,000 smoke alarms in Sioux City.
