SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - It was the full holiday dinner experience, complete with wait staff and a robust menu.

For Gospel Mission executive director Paul Mahaffle, that full experience was important.

“Well, a lot of these people are taken for granted and we want to treat them special truly because they are to God. You know, we want to make them know that truly they’re loved. And that’s what we’re here for,” said Mahaffle.

The Lammers had never volunteered in Sioux City on Christmas. They told KTIV News 4 that the experience was enriching.

“And it’s really nice to have them sit there. And we bring the food to them. And they get to feel special for the day and know that they’re special to other people,” said Vicki Lammers.

Her husband, Tom, was never a waiter. But with a water pitcher in hand, he happily proclaims he’s doing “pretty good.”

About 300 people were served at lunch, and Mahaffle expects a smaller turnout for dinner service. That meal will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Christmas day at the Gospel Mission at 500 Bluff Street.
