Sergeant Bluff Table Tennis club holds tournament for best regional players
SERGEANT BLUFF, IA (KTIV) - Many people think of ping pong as a fun game you might have played at a summer camp or in your friend’s basement growing up. In actuality, table tennis is an Olympic sport with professional athletes who dedicate years of their life to improving.
Saturday, some of the best talent from across the Midwest gathered right here in Siouxland for some high-speed ping pong action.
The Sergeant Bluff Table Tennis Club’s annual tournament is one of the sports’ premier events in the Midwest United States. Held in the first week of March, the tournament brings in some of the top players in the region looking to test their skills against the best.
“People from all over the area sign up,” said Phil Elder, president of the Sergeant Bluff Table Tennis Club. “We’ve got travelers from Stillwater, Oklahoma; Colorado Springs; Omaha; Lincoln; Ames. And it’s a pretty good bet, if you wanna travel that far, you’re pretty good.”
While the tournament’s upper divisions are extremely competitive, the event is open to players of all ages and skill levels. Players are grouped together based on their abilities and compete within their division. This gives each player the opportunity to play in a fun, competitive game and get some good exercise.
“It’s a really great workout,” said Jay Lutt, a competitor in this year’s tournament. “And when you can’t play basketball anymore or a lot of different activities, well, this is a fun one you can play inside during the winter, during the summer outside, and have a good time with everybody and still be active.”
Along with the tournament, the table tennis club also holds open play on Wednesday and Sunday nights. Many players who get involved have similar histories with the sport.
“It’s always the same story,” said Elder. “I had epic battles with my brother, my sister, my neighbor. And we just had so much fun in the basement, and it’s so much fun memories, that I just had to come back and give it a try!”
As a sport you can play all year at any age, table tennis is sure to be a great time whether old memories brought you back or you came looking to make new ones.
