One person was shot in Battle Creek, IA

BATTLE CREEK, Iowa (KTIV) - Authorities have released the name of the person shot in Battle Creek, Iowa.

According to the Ida County Sheriff’s Office, at about 11:15 a.m. Friday they got a 911 call of shots fired in the 300 block of 5th Street in Battle Creek. When they got to the scene, they found 53-year-old Kevin Lee Blume with a single gunshot wound.

A press release from the sheriff’s office says Blume, a Battle Creek resident, was taken to a hospital in Sioux City. The press release does not state his current condition.

The sheriff’s office has not announced any arrests for the shooting.

“At this time, the investigation is ongoing and there is no danger to the public,” said Ida County Sheriff Wade Harriman in a press release.

Previously, Sheriff Harriman said one person was brought to the sheriff’s office for questioning but was not yet considered “in custody.”

BATTLE CREEK, Iowa (KTIV) - Residents in Battle Creek, Iowa tell KTIV there was a shooting Friday morning.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were in the 300 block of 5th Street in Battle Creek with one of the houses having crime scene tape around it. Residents are telling us that law enforcement was called to the area after a shooting that resulted in one person going to the hospital.

KTIV spoke with multiple people at the scene, the roommate of the alleged shooter and three neighbors, and they say a man named Branden Wingert got into an argument with another man that escalated until Wingert allegedly shot the man.

That altercation all started over a pair of dogs that often roam the neighborhood and attack residents, multiple neighbors say. In fact, one neighbor said she was attacked by the dogs on Friday morning prior to the shooting, and her friend was bitten on the hip.

Eyewitnesses say Wingert then went to confront individuals about the dogs, and then the shooting occured. Police have not yet named the victim in the shooting, but the Ida County Sheriff tells KTIV there is no threat to the public. The sheriff says one person has been brought to the sheriff’s office for questioning but is not yet considered “in custody.”

The sheriff says he will release more details later in a press release. The Iowa State Patrol and Monona County sheriff’s deputies were seen assisting with the investigation, though the scene was calm by early Friday afternoon.

The roommate and neighbors say a helicopter was brought in and the victim was life-flighted to a hospital. There is no update yet on his condition.
